Two hours into surveillance, and Jer’s brain had taken him on a lovely tour of all the ways he’d fucked up since Sierra had nominated him pack beta. His skin crawled and his chest ached as though someone had carved out his heart long ago. The only way this night could get better was if Raven showed up to tell him she’d found a new Finn replacement and that he could go die in a ditch.
The damned light beaming from the house flicked off. Great, now the bastard’s going to bed.
He stretched his legs out and stared harder at the house, as if he could summon the man out of his place by will alone.
The front door swung open. Jer sat up fast, fumbling for his keys. Within seconds, a shadow-swathed figure strode for the sedan in the lot and a moment later, the headlights flicked on. The car peeled out of the driveway, and Jer barely had the time to duck before the sedan zoomed past him.
He jammed the keys into the ignition and followed. Anyone heading out at three in the morning either planned on committing sins and transgressions in the dark, or they were roaming around to stop the wrongdoers. Jer kept his lights off as he traced the guy down the small side road. With how few neighbors he had, headlights would make it too clear he had a tail.
The moment the guy turned onto the highway, Jer gave him some lead time before flicking on his beams and sliding onto the asphalt behind him. After a few minutes on the road with no stops and detours down any side streets, Jer guessed what direction they were heading in, one he’d traveled himself too many times to count. Ricketts Glen.
His heart pounded in his chest and sweat was already pricking his palms. He should call Drew to give him the heads-up, but he couldn’t afford the distraction. He couldn’t afford to lose their one lead.
The familiar wooden sign rose into view within minutes, and, as expected, Larry turned onto the narrow road leading to Ricketts Glen’s parking lot. Anger thudded a dull beat in Jer’s chest. After the hatred he’d witnessed at the Coalition meeting and after Daria had gotten caught in one of their silver traps, he didn’t trust those assholes for a moment on his land.
No matter what the humans tried to claim, this was Red Rock territory. They’d bled here in fights, run through the deep forest as pups and defended this place from intruders of all sorts. Humans just provided a different threat. If they wanted to play with the law, he’d do his damndest to outmaneuver them there as well.
Jer gripped tight to the steering wheel, flipping his lights off before he followed through the entrance. He’d prefer to be stalking this guy in his wolf form, but he needed to be able to take pictures for proof if the asshole tried to set more traps up. By
